What I’m Packing for Uganda (And Why It’s Not Just Safari Gear)

With just weeks to go until I head to Uganda, the packing has officially begun—and it’s not your average holiday checklist. This trip is part adventure, part connection, and part giving back. So alongside my camera and mosquito repellent, I’m packing something even more important: intention.

The Safari Essentials

A majestic lioness rests gracefully in a tree in Uganda's wilderness, showcasing the beauty of wildlife.

Let’s start with the practical side—because yes, I’m going on safari (still pinching myself!). Here’s what’s made it into my suitcase so far:

• Lightweight, neutral clothing for game drives

• A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sun cream

• Hiking boots and sandals

• Binoculars and a decent zoom lens

• Bug spray (the extra-strong kind!)

• A refillable water bottle and travel first-aid kit

• Adapters and charging banks for long travel days

But that’s only one part of the story.

Packing With Purpose

This trip is about people as much as places. I’m volunteering at Amatsiko Preparatory School, a community-led school supported by Amatsiko Tours—the company I had the joy of branding earlier this year. “Amatsiko” means hope in Luganda, and it perfectly sums up what this school represents.

Students in uniforms sit at wooden desks and write in notebooks inside a rustic classroom with wooden walls and a metal roof.

So, in addition to the usual travel kit, I’m bringing:

Pencils, colouring supplies, and stationery for the younger children

Storybooks to help expand their imaginations

An old laptop for the new library so the students can connect with the world.

T-shirts

• My presentation slides and materials for a personal branding workshop

A lot of gratitude—for the opportunity to connect, learn, and contribute

Why I’m Doing This

When I first started working with Alex on the Amatsiko Tours brand, I had no idea it would lead me here. But this is what I love about the work I do—it creates ripples. What started as a brand identity project turned into a real-world connection. A chance to stand in the room, not just behind the screen.

The branding workshop I’m running is a simple session about identity, confidence, and what it means to show up in the world with purpose. It’s the same message I share with my clients—just tailored for young people who are full of potential and hope.

The Real Essentials

In the end, the most important things I’m taking with me won’t weigh down my luggage:

• A willingness to listen and learn

• A sense of adventure

• The belief that small actions can create real change

If you’ve got any tips from your own adventures, I’d love to hear them. Or if you want to join me on this adventure of a lifetime, book now with Amatsiko Tours!
